Day 4

1. Grammar

Today you will learn how to use adverb clauses with 'in case', 'in the event that', 'unless', and 'only if' to show conditions.
For homework, complete C17 Ex13-19 pp. 369-373 in your grammar handout.
Note that we will have a quiz on everything you've learned this week on Friday July 11, 2008.

2. Writing

You will analyze the organization of information in the position essay 'Open Study Halls' (Write Source 8, p.225) focusing on the thesis statement, topic sentences, and details. You will then brainstorm controversial topics either at school or in the local community and choose one that you feel strongly about. You will then state your position and start to gather reasons to support your position (Write Source 8, pp. 227-229)

3. Publishing

In today's lesson, you'll first add a new post to your blog. You'll also add a page element so that viewers can easily subscribe to your blog. Here's what you need to do:
  1. Open Firefox browser by clicking the icon on your Desktop.
  2. Sign in to Google Accounts by clicking on 'My Account' in the Firefox Toolbar. You should now be in the 'Google Accounts' page.
  3. Click on 'Blogger'. If you don't see this, then just click 'More' at the bottom of the page.
  4. In Blogger look for the name of your blog then click on 'New Post', which should take you to the 'Create' page.
  5. Put in a title such as 'Persuasive Essay Prewriting' then type in your position statement, three reasons, and details to support your reasons. If you haven't finished this yet just type in what you have so far. When you've finished, click 'Publish'.
  6. Now check out your blog online by clicking 'View Blog (in a new window)'
  7. Now go back to the other tab and click on 'Edit Post' > 'Layout' > 'Add a Page Element' then under 'Subscription Links' click 'Add to Blog' > 'Save'
  8. Now click 'View Blog' and you should notice the 'Subscribe To' page element in the left column of your blog.
  9. You're done. Good Job!
Lastly, I want you to email me the URL of your blog (e.g. my blog's URL is http://paulristsummer2008.blogspot.com). No instructions for this - you should be able to do this yourself now!

Tomorrow we'll add the 'Blog List' Page Element to our blogs so that we can easily link to new posts from all the students in our class.
